Ok so this is one of our favorite hiking areas in the immediate Anchorage area. The Glen Alps Trailhead Rest Area is the parking area for the trailheads for BOTH Flattop Mountain and Little O'Malley Peak. Actually, there is more hiking that begins here to other areas like Big O'Malley and the Powerline Pass trail as well. The point is... THIS trailhead is popular and is a basecamp of sorts for all sorts of hiking up mountains and through valleys. As far as hiking these peaks go, they will get your heart pumping with the elevation climbing. It's completely worth the effort though!
NOTE: this is also a GREAT spot to just see an overlook of the Anchorage city as a whole too. There is a flat paved trail that is even wheel-chair accessible that goes a short distance up a hill for the overlook. It's a great spot to hit up year-round for these views! Also it's a rad place to checkout the northern lights on a clear night as well! The actual hiking trails we've listed as summer preferred, but you can hike them in the winter with the right gear (snow shoes etc.)
As with all popular trailhead areas, there is a small parking fee ($5 or $10 for overnight if backpacking).
We locals refer to this area as simple the trailhead for Flattop, but it's technically called the Glen Alps Trailhead. It's a popular spot in Alaska, nestled at an elevation that offers epic views of the surrounding landscape. It's a go-to place for outdoor adventurers looking to hit the trails or just take a breather while soaking in the natural beauty. With its convenient location, it serves as a launching point for various hiking routes, making it perfect for both seasoned hikers and casual walkers. Visitors often appreciate the well-maintained facilities and the chance to connect with nature, whether they're planning a day hike or simply enjoying a picnic with friends. The area is also a great spot for wildlife watching, adding to the overall charm of this scenic rest area.
