Blausee – Switzerland’s Enchanted Blue Lake

Blausee (887 m / 2,910 ft) is a small but magical lake hidden deep in the forest near Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland. Famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water, Blausee feels like a fairytale – with tiny islands, wooden bridges, and legend-filled atmosphere. Despite its size, it’s one of Switzerland’s most photographed and romantic lakes.

How to Get There

  • By car: 45 minutes from Bern, parking available at the entrance.

  • By train: to Frutigen or Kandersteg, then local bus to Blausee.

  • The lake is inside a nature park with an entrance fee: ~12 CHF (adult).

What Awaits You at Blausee

  • Turquoise waters so clear you can see trout swimming below.

  • A romantic legend: the lake’s color is said to come from the tears of a maiden who lost her love.

  • Boat rides on glass-bottom boats gliding silently over the lake.

  • Charming nature park with walking paths, picnic areas, and sculptures.

  • A small hotel & restaurant by the lake serving fresh trout dishes.

Insider Tips

  • Best time: early morning or late afternoon for calm reflections and fewer crowds.

  • Perfect for couples, families, and photographers.

  • The park is open year-round – in winter, Blausee surrounded by snow is especially magical.

  • Bring cash for entrance and small purchases.
