Grosse Mythen – An Iconic Hike in Central Switzerland
Grosse Mythen (1,898 m / 6,227 ft) is one of the most striking peaks in Central Switzerland. Its pyramid-shaped summit dominates the skyline, and climbing it is a must-do hike in Canton Schwyz. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking 360° panorama of Lake Lucerne, the Alps, and the entire Schwyz region.
Hiking Route to the Summit
Starting point: Rotenflue (accessible by cable car from Rickenbach, near Schwyz).
Distance: ~2.5 km from Rotenflue.
Time: about 1 hours uphill (one way).
Elevation gain: ~500 m.
Difficulty: moderate to challenging – the trail is steep, rocky, and partially exposed, but well secured with railings and chains. Best for hikers with sturdy footwear and some mountain experience.
At the Summit
On top, you’ll find a small mountain hut restaurant (open only in summer) where you can enjoy a soup, homemade cake, or coffee. Sitting here with endless views over Switzerland is truly unforgettable.
How to Get There
Travel by car or train to Schwyz-Rickenbach.
Take the Rotenfluebahn cable car up (approx. 20 CHF round trip).
From Rotenflue, follow the marked trail to Grosse Mythen.
Insider Tips
Best season: June–October (the trail is closed in winter for safety reasons).
Bring plenty of water – the hike is steep and can be hot in the sun.
Start early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy peaceful views at the top.
For a bigger challenge, hike up from the valley station in Rickenbach instead of taking the cable car.
