Brienz Rothorn Bahn – Steam Train to the Alps

Brienz Rothorn Bahn is one of Switzerland’s most unique mountain railways – a nostalgic steam cogwheel train that has been climbing from Lake Brienz up to the Rothorn summit (2,350 m / 7,710 ft) since 1892. It’s more than just transportation – it’s a time-travel experience through alpine meadows, forests, and pastures, with breathtaking views unfolding at every turn.

The Journey

  • Departure: Brienz station (right by Lake Brienz).

  • Duration: about 1 hour to the top.

  • Distance: 7.6 km, with an elevation gain of 1,678 m.

  • You’ll ride in vintage red carriages pushed by steam locomotives – the sound and smell make it a true adventure.

💰 Price: ~96 CHF return (adult). Half Fare Card / GA valid.

At the Summit – Brienzer Rothorn (2,350 m)

  • 360° panorama: Lakes Brienz, Lucerne, and the Bernese Alps, including Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

  • Hiking trails: ridge hikes to Giswil or towards Brünig Pass.

  • Mountain restaurant: terrace with stunning views – perfect for a Rösti or coffee.

Insider Tips

  • Best season: June–October (train runs only in summer/autumn).

  • Sit on the right side uphill for the best views of Lake Brienz.

  • Book in advance during weekends – it’s popular with locals and tourists.

  • Sunrise and sunset rides (special events) are unforgettable.
