Brienz Rothorn Bahn – Steam Train to the Alps
Brienz Rothorn Bahn is one of Switzerland’s most unique mountain railways – a nostalgic steam cogwheel train that has been climbing from Lake Brienz up to the Rothorn summit (2,350 m / 7,710 ft) since 1892. It’s more than just transportation – it’s a time-travel experience through alpine meadows, forests, and pastures, with breathtaking views unfolding at every turn.
The Journey
Departure: Brienz station (right by Lake Brienz).
Duration: about 1 hour to the top.
Distance: 7.6 km, with an elevation gain of 1,678 m.
You’ll ride in vintage red carriages pushed by steam locomotives – the sound and smell make it a true adventure.
