Gelmerbahn – Switzerland’s Rollercoaster Funicular
Gelmerbahn is one of Switzerland’s most thrilling rides – a funicular once holding the record as the steepest passenger funicular in Europe with an incredible 106% gradient. Originally built in 1926 to transport construction materials for the Gelmer dam, today it’s open for adventurous visitors who want to experience the Alps in the most exciting way.
The Ride
Duration: about 12 minutes.
Distance: 1,028 m with 448 m elevation gain.
The car is open-air, so you feel the steep incline directly – it’s often compared to a rollercoaster without the speed.
At the top, you step into the world of Gelmersee, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful turquoise lakes.
💰 Price: ~32 CHF return (adult). Tickets must be booked online in advance – places are limited and sell out quickly in summer.
What Awaits You
Adrenaline from the ride itself – especially when you look back down into the valley.
Stunning views of the Grimsel Pass region, granite cliffs, and alpine streams.
A gateway to hikes around Gelmersee and further into the high Alps.
Insider Tips
Best season: June–October (the funicular operates only in summer/autumn).
Sit in the front row for the most thrilling view during the steep climb.
Combine the ride with a walk around Gelmersee (2 hours) or a visit to the Handeck suspension bridge nearby.
Not recommended if you’re afraid of heights – the incline feels extreme!
