This is a super fun hiking trail for experienced adventuerers. I'd recommend taking the Mt Karioi track from the Whaanga Road side as it's the more scenic route despite being slightly longer.
The trail is relatively steep and includes scrambles over tree roots and some ropes and chains to navigate. It can be very muddy in winter or after a lot of rain so be prepared with good hiking boots. At the summit you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the coastline.

Further detail: Mount Karioi, located in New Zealand's North Island, is an extinct stratovolcano that stands 756 meters tall. It's part of a line of six volcanoes and has been around for about 2.4 million years. With a rich history dating back to pre-European times, Karioi is not just a mountain - it's a cultural icon with ties to Māori legends and European settlement. Today, it's a popular spot for hiking and exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Waikato region.
