This hidden gem might be one of the most beautiful spots I've ever camped.

The stunning Lake Wilson sits at the head of the Valley of the Trolls and is accessible from the Routeburn Track. You can wild camp here as per the local bylaws but you must carry out what you carry in (including human waste as this does not break down in alpine environments).

The Routeburn track part of the hike is straightforward and well marked. Just before you reach Harris Shelter you'll want to turn off to head around Lake Harris into Valley of the Trolls. At the end of the valley, make your way up to the right of the waterfall. There are some challenging sections with rock scrambles at this point to make sure you are prepared.

Extra info:

  • Walking distance: Approx 17km

  • Walking time: 6-8 hours from Routeburn Shelter (Glenorchy side)

  • Elevation gain: 1300m
