Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, also known as Badis is a Spanish exclave located off the coast of Morocco in the Mediterranean Sea. The island, which has been transformed from an its previous natural island state to it current attached peninsula state, is one of the smallest international borders in the world stretching just 80 meters long. Formerly used as a base for corsairs operating in the region near the Strait of Gibraltar, the island is now governed by direct rule from Madrid and has a population of only a small number of Spanish military personnel. Connected to its smaller eastward neighbour, La Isleta, and the Moroccan shore by sandy isthmuses, the island is a modern day plazas respectivas sovereignty to Spain.
