Nestled beside the tranquil Funtensee, Kärlingerhaus is one of the most beautifully located alpine huts in the Berchtesgaden Alps. Surrounded by rugged peaks and alpine meadows, it offers not only a place to rest but a true mountain experience. The most popular access route begins in St. Bartholomä, which you can only reach by boat across the Königssee. From there, it’s a demanding but rewarding hike of about 4 to 5 hours, covering 11 kilometers and 1,100 meters of elevation gain.
Given the distance and the limited boat schedule (the last boat usually leaves around 5 PM), spending the night at the hut is highly recommended. The Kärlingerhaus is known not just for its breathtaking location, but also for its warm hospitality and genuinely kind hosts. The food here is excellent – hearty, regional, and just what you need after a long day in the mountains. There’s no cell service at the hut, so enjoy the digital detox and soak up the alpine peace and quiet. Make sure to book ahead, especially on weekends, as this special place is understandably popular.
