The Vilsalpsee is a stunning alpine lake in the Tannheim Valley, known for its crystal-clear water and dramatic mountain backdrop. Access to the lake by private car is only permitted before 8:00 am and after 5:00 pm. Between those hours, visitors can take the local bus (Line 121), which runs regularly from Tannheim to the lake. Alternatively, you can walk from the Tannheim-Schmieden parking area — it’s an easy and scenic 45-minute walk (around 3 km) along a well-marked path.
The circular trail around the lake takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to walk the entire loop on a well-maintained and scenic path. The route offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and is suitable for all fitness levels. If you’d like to extend your hike, you can continue to the Bergaicht Waterfall and Vilsalpe, which adds about an hour, 3.5 km, and 130 meters of elevation gain.
The Vilsalpsee is especially magical at sunrise and sunset, when the light hits the water and surrounding peaks — a perfect time for photos or simply to soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
