Königssee is one of the most iconic and breathtaking lakes in the German Alps, nestled at the foot of the Watzmann massif near Berchtesgaden. The emerald-green lake lies within Berchtesgaden National Park and is famous for its crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs, and serene atmosphere.
There’s no hiking trail around the lake — the only way to reach its most famous spots is by electric boat. The scenic boat ride includes a stop at the famous Echo Wall, where a boatman plays a trumpet and the echo bounces off the sheer rock faces. The full tour costs €29 (as of 2025) and takes you to the remote Obersee and the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä. Boats run approximately from 8 AM to 6 PM in summer — always check the schedule in advance.
Despite its inviting color, Königssee is one of Germany’s deepest lakes, and even in summer, the water temperature rarely rises above 15°C. Swimming is allowed but only for the brave! You can also rent rowboats to explore the lake on your own.
Important to know: Wild camping and drones are strictly prohibited in the national park. Missing the last return boat can be expensive and complicated, so plan accordingly. In peak season and on weekends, the area gets extremely crowded — arrive early and book your boat ticket online if possible. A large parking lot is available directly at the lake.
