The Bowing Deer and Ancient Spirits
Nara is a place where history feels alive. Just a short train ride from Osaka, this park is home to over 1,000 wild deers, considered messengers of the gods.
To fully experience the magic of Nara, arrive before 10:00 AM.
The Biscuit Secret: Local vendors sell Shika Senbei (deer crackers). However, they have a limited daily stock. Once they sell out, that’s it for the day! Arriving early ensures you get to participate in this unique tradition.
The Bowing Tradition: These deer are famous for a reason. If you bow to a deer, it will often bow back to ask for a treat. It’s an incredible moment of connection between humans and nature.
A Word of Caution: While they look adorable, the deer can be persistent when they see food. If you are traveling with young children, be careful; the deer can get a bit pushy or "nippy" if they think you’re hiding snacks!
⛩️ Cultural Gems: Beyond the Deer
Nara is more than just animals; it holds some of Japan’s most impressive spiritual sites:
Todai-ji Temple: A marvel of engineering. It houses the Daibutsu (Great Buddha), one of the largest bronze statues in the world. The massive wooden gate (Nandaimon) is equally breathtaking.
Kasuga Taisha: A shrine famous for its thousands of bronze and stone lanterns. It feels like stepping into a Ghibli movie, especially as you walk the forest paths.
The Hidden Lakeside: Don't just rush to the temples! Take a moment to explore the park's edges. We found an incredible lake surrounded by sakura - a quiet "gem" location perfect for photography away from the main crowds.
🚉 Getting to Nara from APA Hotel Nambaminami is incredibly simple and scenic.
The Route: Head to Kintetsu-Namba Station. From there, take the Kintetsu Nara Line.
Pro-Tip: Look for the Rapid Express (marked in red). It will get you to Nara in about 35-40 minutes.
Why Kintetsu? While there is a JR Nara station, the Kintetsu-Nara Station is much closer to the park entrance. It saves you a 15-minute walk, putting you right at the edge of the deer park the moment you step outside.
