🛣️ How to Get There
Nearest major town: Shillong (~82 km / 3–4 hours by road)
Closest villages: Dawki and Shnongpdeng
You can reach the Wah Umngot river by hiring a taxi or driving from Shillong. Most visitors access it either at the boating point in Dawki or upstream at Shnongpdeng, which is quieter and ideal for camping and adventure activities. The road is scenic but narrow in parts, with views of gorges and waterfalls on the way.
🚣♂️ What to Expect
Wah Umngot is known for its glass-clear waters, especially between November and February when there’s minimal rain and the riverbed is visible in detail.
Here’s what you’ll find:
Boating: Traditional wooden boats are available for rent; you can glide across the emerald water for 30–45 minutes.
Swimming : In areas like Shnongpdeng, the river is clean and calm enough for a dip
Fishing & bamboo rafts: You’ll often see locals using time-honored techniques, adding to the river’s charm.
Sunlight: The visibility is best on sunny days when the river reflects the rocks and sand below.
🔍 For the Curious
Wah Umngot is often called one of the cleanest rivers in India—and this is largely thanks to community-driven conservation. The local villages have long treated the river with respect, banning pollution and managing tourism sustainably. Interestingly, this river flows into Bangladesh, forming a natural boundary between the two countries near Dawki. During your boat ride, you're just a few meters from the international border. In monsoon months (June to Sept), the water becomes more forceful and loses its crystal clarity—still impressive, but very different from the calm winter experience.
