Deep in the hills of Meghalaya, hidden away from the usual tourist spots, lies one of the most breathtaking places you’ll ever come across, Wei Sawdong Falls, just a short drive from Cherrapunji (also known as Sohra).
Locals call it Wei Sawdong in the Khasi language, wei meaning pool and sawdong meaning square-shaped. And once you see those natural stone basins filled with water that almost glows, the name just makes sense. The whole place has a kind of quiet magic that photos can’t quite capture.

How to Get There

Getting here is part of the adventure. Wei Sawdong is about 60 km from Shillong and around 12 km from Cherrapunji, so it’s pretty easy to reach by cab or car. The drive is stunning, misty valleys, rolling green hills, and winding roads that make you want to stop every few minutes just to take it all in.

Once you reach near Dainthlen Falls , it’s time to lace up your shoes. The trail to Wei Sawdong starts here and takes about 15–20 minutes each way. It’s not super long, but it is steep, with uneven steps made from stones and wooden planks. Take your time, hold onto the railings, and you’ll be fine.

What to Expect

The trek down is a little tricky, especially if it’s been raining, but the moment you see the falls, every bit of effort feels totally worth it. From the top, you’ll see all three tiers lined up like nature’s own staircase, with turquoise water collecting at each level.

There’s something deeply calming about this place. The air smells fresh and earthy, birds chirp in the trees above, and the sound of the waterfall seems to echo through the forest. You can sit on the rocks, snap some photos, or just breathe it all in. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay a while and forget about your phone.

For the Adventurous

If you’re feeling up for more, pair your visit with Dainthlen Falls, it’s really close by. A lot of people visit both in one trip since they offer totally different vibes. Wei Sawdong feels tucked away and quiet, while Dainthlen is more open and dramatic.

Monsoon season (June to September) is when the waterfall is at its most powerful and lush—but the trail can get slippery. October to March is a great time to go if you want clearer skies, dry paths, and fewer people around.

Good to Know

  • Entry fee: ₹50 per person; parking is ₹20–₹50 depending on vehicle

  • Open roughly from 7 AM to 5 PM, get there early for the best light and fewer people

  • Wear shoes with good grip, trail isn’t paved

  • Bring your own water and snacks; there are no shops once you start the trek

  • Mobile signal is spotty, so let someone know your plans before you head out

  • Not ideal for people who have trouble walking or climbing, it's steep and uneven

Wei Sawdong isn’t packed with crowds or stalls or signs. It’s peaceful, raw, and full of natural beauty—the kind of place that makes you feel small in the best possible way. If you love waterfalls, quiet trails, and finding those “hidden gem” spots, this one will stay with you long after you’ve left.
