Tucked away in the quiet hills near Sohra (Cherrapunji), Mawsawa Falls is one of Meghalaya’s lesser-known gems, perfect for travelers seeking natural beauty without the usual crowd. With its multi-tiered drop, crystal-clear pools, and surrounding forest, the falls offer a refreshing escape into nature.Unlike some of the more tourist-heavy spots in the region, Mawsawa remains peaceful and relatively untouched, making it a favorite among locals and offbeat explorers. It’s also a great place for a quick dip, a small picnic, or just some quiet time with the sound of rushing water.

How to Get There

Mawsawa Falls is located about 15–20 km from Sohra town, near the village of Lad Mawphlang. You can reach it by hiring a cab or driving yourself along the scenic Sohra-Mawsynram road. Once you reach the parking area (near a small gate), there’s a short 5–10 minute downhill trail through greenery that leads you straight to the base of the waterfall. The path is fairly easy and suitable for most fitness levels, though it can get slippery during the monsoon.

What to Expect

The waterfall cascades down rocky steps into several clear, swimmable pools, each layered below the other. The surrounding rocks and trees create a calm, natural atmosphere, ideal for relaxing or exploring. You can walk right up to the lower pools, sit by the water, or take a dip if the flow isn’t too strong. It's a family-friendly spot but lacks built-in safety features, so caution is advised, especially with kids.

There aren’t any shops or vendors nearby, so it’s best to bring your own water and snacks.

For the Curious

Mawsawa isn’t just a waterfall—it’s part of a growing eco-tourism area. Locals have worked to maintain the trail and keep the site clean. There’s also a small entry fee (used for upkeep), and on weekends, you might meet local guides offering more info about nearby nature spots. If you're up for it, Mawsawa can be combined with visits to nearby attractions like Garden of Caves or Arwah Caves for a half-day nature trip.
