Noh Kalikai
The name "Nohkalikai" translates to “Jump of Ka Likai” in Khasi, referring to a tragic legend tied to the falls. But beyond its folklore, what you’ll find is raw natural beauty, water cascading straight off a high cliff into a pool that glows an otherworldly blue when the light hits just right.
How to Get There
Nohkalikai Falls is about 5 km from Sohra town and roughly 55–60 km from Shillong (around 2–2.5 hours by car). The road is mostly smooth and scenic, with signboards leading up to the viewpoint. There’s a designated parking area near the viewpoint, with easy access. No trekking is required to see the falls, though you can explore the surrounding trails if you like walking.
What to Expect
A dramatic vertical drop of water surrounded by steep cliffs
A well-laid viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the waterfall and valley
On clear days, the pool at the base glows turquoise-blue
Cloud cover and mist are common—check weather for visibility
Shops and stalls selling local snacks, souvenirs, and fruit
You can’t trek down to the bottom of the falls (it’s too steep and dangerous), but the view from the top is more than enough—it’s spellbinding.
For the Curious
The tragic legend of Ka Likai is tied deeply to this site. It tells the story of a woman named Likai who jumped to her death from the cliff after a heartbreaking family betrayal. While the tale is grim, it's also a part of the region’s rich oral history.
Geographically, this fall is a plunge-type, the water doesn’t touch the cliffside as it drops, making it all the more visually stunning.
