Known locally as Ka Bri Ki Synrang, which translates to “The Garden of Caves,” this peaceful site features a blend of natural rock formations, waterfalls, caves, and dense forest trails that are easy to walk and explore.
It’s a scenic forest area dotted with shallow caves, hanging roots, and seasonal waterfalls. Each spot inside has its own name and significance, with many places shaped by centuries of flowing water and natural erosion.
How to Get There
The Garden of Caves is located about 50–60 km from Shillong and takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours to reach by car. It lies in Laitmawsiang village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The route is smooth and scenic, and most local taxis or drivers are familiar with the location. Once there, visitors can pay a small entry fee at the gate, and then follow a well-marked path that loops through the site. There’s no strenuous trekking involved, just a walk through forested terrain.
What to Expect
The site is divided into different areas, each with distinct features like:
Bamkhor Waterfall – a gentle stream cascading over rock
U Mawdohnud – a cave-like opening near a massive boulder
Riat Umlwai – a viewpoint with a seasonal waterfall
Ka Synrang Ksiar – known as the “Golden Cave” for its mossy, gold-toned walls
Everything is surrounded by forest, with the sound of trickling water and birds in the background. It’s calm, green, and cool throughout the day.
For the Curious
While you don’t need a guide to explore, local guides are available at the entrance if you'd like to hear the traditional Khasi names and stories associated with each spot. Since it’s not heavily commercialized, the site is best for people who enjoy quiet nature walks, light exploration, and photography. It’s also suitable for families, seniors, and solo travelers looking for a peaceful nature escape.
