The name Laitlum translates to “end of hills” in the local Khasi language, and once you’re there, you’ll see why. It feels like standing at the edge of the world, where rolling green ridges drop away into mist-covered valleys far below. When the skies are clear, you get 360-degree views of layered hills, deep gorges, and remote villages nestled in the folds of the land.

How to Get There

Laitlum Canyon is located about 22 km from Shillong, in the Smit region of East Khasi Hills. The drive takes around 45 minutes to an hour, winding through pine forests and small villages. There’s a small parking area near the viewpoint, and no long hike is needed unless you choose to go further down the trails.

What to Expect

This is a place for wide horizons and quiet reflection. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • A panoramic view of deep valleys and distant hills

  • Stone steps and trails leading down to remote villages like Rasong

  • The famous Laitlum Bamboo Stairs (if you're trekking down)

  • Frequent fog that rolls in and out—changing the view every minute

  • A few local vendors selling tea, snacks, and handmade items

Sunrise and late afternoon are the best times for photography, while the midday fog often adds a moody, mystical touch. It’s also a great picnic spot if the weather’s good.

For the Curious

Laitlum isn’t just a viewpoint,it’s also a cultural window. Villagers from the valley below often climb up the trails daily. The stairway to Rasong, carved out of stone and bamboo, is still used regularly. While the top is peaceful, the trek down to the village is challenging, about 3,000 steps one way, so only attempt it if you’re fit and have time to return before dark.

You might also recognize the place from Indian films and music videos; Featured in the Indian hit, Rock on 2, featuring the legendary singer, Usha Uthup, singing the traditional Khasi song,”Hoi Kwi” ,its cinematic landscape makes it a favorite among filmmakers and photographers.
