What you’ll do

Hakuba in summer and autumn is quiet, cool, and surrounded by open mountain trails, making it one of the best times to enjoy the Japanese Alps without crowds. Accommodation prices drop to half or even a quarter of winter rates, so you can stay longer and explore more.

1. Shinkansen + Bus (Fastest & Most Comfortable)

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station to Nagano Station, then transfer to an express bus to Hakuba.

  • Typical travel time: around 3 to 4 hours total.

  • Overview: Fast, reliable, and comfortable travel with scenic views of the countryside.

  • Info: Shinkansen to Nagano, then Alpico bus to Hakuba.


2. Limited Express Train (Direct Option)

You can take the Azusa limited express train from Shinjuku Station directly toward Hakuba (via Matsumoto and the JR Ōito Line).

  • Travel time: about 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours.

  • Note: There’s usually one direct service per day and advance reservation is recommended.

  • Info: Azusa includes JR express service getting close to Hakuba Station.


3. Direct Highway Bus

A direct highway bus departs from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (or Bus Terminal Tokyo) to Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal.

  • Travel time: often around 5 hours or more.

  • Best for: Lower cost and fewer transfers compared to train + bus.

  • Info: Bus routes operate seasonally and should be booked in advance.


4. Driving by Car

Renting a car and driving from Tokyo to Hakuba is straightforward, taking around 3 to 3.5 hours via expressways (e.g., Kan-etsu and Joshin-etsu).

  • Pros: Flexible schedule, easy if carrying outdoor gear.

  • Cons: Toll and parking costs apply.

  • Overview: Typical scenic drive through Nagano countryside.
