The Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center, also known as Ikebukuro Bōsai-kan, is a disaster preparedness center run by the Tokyo Fire Department. It's a place where you can experience earthquake simulations, fire evacuation drills, and first aid training, all designed to teach you how to respond in emergencies like earthquakes and fires — very relevant in Japan.

  • Earthquake Simulation: Experience what a real earthquake feels like (up to level 7 on the Japanese seismic scale) and learn how to protect yourself.

  • Fire Evacuation Simulation: Practice escaping from a smoke-filled room to learn how to evacuate safely in case of a fire.

  • First Aid Training: Basic lessons on CPR and how to help others during emergencies.

  • Disaster Preparedness Videos and Exhibits: Learn about Japan’s disaster history and tips for staying safe.

Reservations

  • Reservations are required for the full experience. You can book via phone or online (Japanese language site).

  • Phone for reservations: +81-3-3590-6565 (Japanese recommended, but simple English may work).

  • Walk-ins may be allowed for limited access, but it’s best to book in advance to join the guided sessions.

  • Fee: Free of charge.

Hours & Access

  • Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed on Wednesdays and every 3rd Thursday, plus holidays)
