Trailhead: Free parking available at Aisu-no-Yakata Museum
Time to Summit: Approx. 30 minutes one way
Best Season: Year-round (avoid peak summer heat; carry water and sun protection)
Nicknamed “Gokasho Fuji” for its beautiful, Fuji-like silhouette, Mt. Sengen is one of Mie Prefecture’s most popular low mountain hikes. The summit rewards hikers with a breathtaking view of Gokasho Bay, framed by a red torii gate in the foreground. The scene is so captivating that it’s easy to lose track of time while taking it in.
Starting Point – Aisu-no-Yakata
Begin at Aisu-no-Yakata, a small museum dedicated to Aisu Ikosai, founder of the Kage-ryu school of swordsmanship. From here, walk about 5 minutes toward Kirihara until you see the trailhead sign.
Trailhead to Orchard Gate
Continue along the road until you reach a kemonodome (animal gate) near a mandarin orange grove. The entrance to the trail is just before the gate on your left.
The Climb
The trail begins like a narrow animal path, with the slope gradually becoming steeper. Take your time and pace yourself. Partway up, you’ll encounter a fork—keep to the left (the right path leads to a dead end).
White Stone Steps to the Sky
Near the summit, a set of white stone steps appears. Climbing them feels like ascending toward the sky—at the top, the view opens up to an unforgettable panorama.
From the peak, you can enjoy a sweeping view of Gokasho Bay and Minami Ise Town. The bay’s shape resembles a maple leaf, which is why it was once called Fuko-wan (“Maple Bay”). Benches are available for resting while you take in the sea breeze.
The summit also holds an Sengen Monument engraved with the four faces of the Sengen Bodhisattva, as Mt. Fuji can be viewed from all directions here. It even enshrines Mt. Hoei, a smaller peak formed during a historic eruption of Mt. Fuji—features unique to this Sengen shrine compared to others in the region.
Water & Snacks: There are no vending machines at Aisu-no-Yakata—bring your own.
Clothing: Long sleeves, long pants, hat, sturdy shoes, and a backpack. In warmer months, insect repellent is recommended.
Weather Prep: In summer, hydrate often and take breaks to prevent heatstroke.
