Nara Park is one of Japan’s most iconic spots—famous for its friendly, free-roaming deer and proximity to historic sites like Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha. But while the deer may look cute and calm, there are some important things to know before you visit.

  • Buy Deer Senbei (Crackers):
You can purchase these special deer crackers (鹿せんべい) from stalls inside the park for about ¥200. Only feed them these. Human food is harmful.

  • Bow, and They’ll Bow Back:
Many deer in Nara have learned to bow politely to ask for a cracker. Try bowing first—they may respond!

  • Visit Early Morning or Late Afternoon:
Fewer crowds, gentler deer, and better lighting for photos. Plus, the park has a peaceful charm in the early hours.

  • 🚫 Never Feed or Touch Fawns:
Fawns (baby deer) only drink milk. If touched, your scent may cause their mothers to abandon them. No matter how cute—do not touch.

  • 🚫 Don’t Tease or Hide the Crackers:
The deer recognize the scent and sound of senbei. If you tease them or try to fake them out, they can become aggressive.

  • 🚫 Don’t Walk Around Holding Senbei Aimlessly:
Once they know you have food, they will surround and chase you. Break the crackers in half and feed quickly and calmly.

  • 🚫 Don’t Bring Outside Food:
Feeding them anything other than designated crackers can be dangerous for their health.
