My friend runs Nekodake Sansou, a mountain hut responsible for maintaining the trails around Yonako Falls. During a very limited period each summer, they offer a rare experience rooted in Japan’s mountain traditions: 滝行 (Takigyo), or waterfall training.
What Is Takigyo?
Takigyo is a traditional Japanese practice tied to mountain spirituality. Participants stand beneath a powerful waterfall, using cold water and stillness to strip away distraction and sharpen mental clarity. The experience is simple, intense, and deeply humbling.
Why Yonako Falls Is Unique
Takigyo at Yonako Falls is held at one of the highest-altitude waterfalls in Japan, surrounded by untouched forest and clean mountain air.
The water flows directly from alpine snowmelt deep in the mountains, making the experience both physically demanding and mentally clarifying in a way few locations can offer.
