In 2022, I had the pleasure of hiking Mount Rishiri where we stayed in a cottage overnight right at Oshidomari Trailhead and started our hike at 6 AM. The most remarkable part of the journey was the continuous ocean view throughout the hike, offering a stunning 360-degree panorama.

Mount Rishiri provides a challenging yet rewarding adventure. Accessible via ferry from Wakkanai, we chose the Oshidomari Hiking Trail, starting at Rishiri Hokuroku Campground. The rocky terrain and steep climbs were demanding, but the breathtaking views made it all worthwhile. Remember to bring your own water and a portable toilet. Post-hike, soaking in the Rishiri Fuji Onsen was an excellent way to unwind.

Starting Point: Oshidomari Course is located near the Hokuroku Campsite

Trail Details:

  • Distance: Approximately 11 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: Around 1,700 meters

  • Difficulty: Challenging

  • Time Required: 9 hours round trip

Route Description:

  • Starting Ascent: The trail begins with a steady climb through dense forests, which provide shade and a peaceful setting. You’ll encounter several switchbacks as the path winds upward.

  • Mid-Section Views: About halfway up, the forest begins to thin, revealing open views of Rishiri Island, the surrounding sea, and the rugged volcanic terrain. This is a good place for a short break to enjoy the scenery.

  • Final Push to the Summit: The trail becomes steeper and more exposed as you approach the summit. This section requires careful footing, as loose rocks and volcanic gravel can make it slippery. Trekking poles can be helpful for stability.

  • Summit Experience: Reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of Hokkaido, the Sea of Japan, and, on a clear day, even the distant shores of Russia. The feeling of standing atop Mt. Rishiri is truly unforgettable.

Accommodation:

  • Rishiri Maruzen Hotel: Located near Oshidomari Port, offering easy access to the trailhead. They provide both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms, with shuttle service available for guests.

  • Rishiri Hokuroku Campground: For a more adventurous stay, this campground is located within the national park, offering easy access to the trails.
