You can either drive through Zao Echo Line or hike from Zao Ropeway Upper Station. The hike is frrom Kattadake, head left toward Kumanodake Peak; it’s about an hour’s hike to the summit, with a 45-minute return trip.

Best Time to Visit

  • Spring to Autumn (April to November): The Zao Echo Line road allows easy access during these months, offering clear views of the crater. The area is ideal for hiking, sightseeing, and enjoying the dynamic natural scenery.

  • Winter Season: The crater area is closed to vehicles in winter due to heavy snowfall, but nearby Zao Onsen becomes a winter wonderland, known for its hot springs and the famous “Snow Monsters” (frost-covered trees) that attract visitors to Mount Zao’s ski slopes.

Getting There

  • By Car: Drive along the Zao Echo Line (a toll road) to access the observation point near Okama Crater.

  • By Public Transport: It is best to take the Zao Ropeway then do a 45-minute hike to the crater.
