Tatami-Making Experience

I visited Sato Tatami to try my hand at making a mini tatami mat, and it turned out to be a fascinating experience! This workshop is run by a skilled craftsman who brings a modern twist to traditional tatami-making.

Important: You can only book this experience if you’re staying at Iizukatei, as the craftsman only accepts reservations from hotel guests.

During the session, you’ll learn about the materials and techniques behind tatami craftsmanship, and then get to create your own mini tatami. It’s surprisingly hands-on and detailed, but the process was easier and more fun than I expected. Best of all, you can take your mini tatami home as a unique souvenir to remember the experience.
