A charming ryokan tucked away in the mountains of Tanabe, right along the Oto River — a perfect stop for those walking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. The rooms are simple but spacious, the staff are warm and welcoming, and the riverside setting makes it a truly special place to unwind.

You can dig your own hot spring bath in the riverbank with rental shovels provided by the inn — a unique Kawayu Onsen experience you won’t forget. There’s also a large open-air communal bath by the river, perfect for relaxing your legs after a long day of hiking.

The stay includes kaiseki-style dinners and breakfasts, served in a spacious dining hall with a mix of local specialties and comforting classics.

  • Pick-up service is available from nearby stations or trailheads (check in advance and reserve if needed).

  • Good access to the Kumano Hongu Taisha area by bus or on foot depending on your route.

  • Rooms come with yukata, towels, and basic amenities.
