New Zealand is called Middle Earth to LOTR fans, but did you know Narnia is also in New Zealand? The iconic Cathedral Cove featured in the Prince Caspian movie and is a breathtakingly beautiful part of the country. The Māori name for the coastal area is Te Whanganui-A-Hei; accessible only by foot, kayak, or boat, the cove is famous for its stunning rock archway that frames the turquoise sea.

Take a leisurely stroll along the coastal track from Hahei Beach to Cathedral Cove, enjoying the scenic views along the way. Once there, relax on the golden sands, go for a swim, or explore the sea caves and rock formations. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for snorkelling, where you can discover a colourful array of marine life beneath the surface.

Note: Due to weather events in 2023, there is currently NO walking access to Cathedral Cove. Check the DOC website for up-to-date information. Opt for a water taxi or kayak tour from Whitianga or Hahei to explore the marine reserve land at the Cathedral Cove beach.

Remember: The cliffs are fragile, stay on marked paths.

Personal tip: Cathedral Cove can get extremely busy during the summer months, particularly at midday. Visit in the shoulder seasons, or early morning to avoid the crowds. Take your togs and snorkel to enjoy swimming in the aquamarine blue marine reserve.

Pronunciation: Te Whanganui-A-Hei - teh - faa-ngaa-noo-ee - aa - hey
