Located on Auckland’s rugged and wild West Coast, Bethells Beach, also called Te Henga, is a secluded spot away from NZ’s largest city. The expansive black sand beach is often windswept with seaspray coming off the crashing waves. Explore the secluded O’Neill Bay to the north, or wander the sea caves at the south end of Bethells beach. In summer, this is a popular spot for surfing and swimming, but be aware of unpredictable waves and strong currents. Walk along the beach to find a quiet picnic spot and enjoy the moody West Coast.

Located approx 45 minutes from Auckland CBD, follow Bethells Road from Waitakere township and access the beach from the carpark.

Remember: Swimming and surfing can be dangerous at Auckland’s West Coast beaches. It is advisable to only swim when the surf life saving team patrols 11am to 4pm from labour weekend to Easter. Swim between the flags.

Personal tip: I love visiting the West Coast for sunset, you may be lucky to have an incredible golden hour or a colourful sunset. Enjoy exploring!
