Wengen is a charming car-free village located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland.

Keep in mind that it's a car-free village. You'll need to take a scenic train, which costs 14.40 CHF per person for a return trip. Taking this scenic train is a must, and it's an incredible experience. I recommend visiting in May, as this is when I found it to be the least crowded. Believe me, it's much more enjoyable when there are fewer people.

When I visited the Jungfrau region for the first time, I chose Wengen as my base and stayed there for three days. From here, you have access to amazing places. You can go to Grindelwald, to Kleine Scheidegg, or take a cable car to Männlichen and then hike to Kleine Scheidegg.

I recommend Wengen as a base if you want to explore this side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Details:

🚗 Arrive in Lauterbrunnen and park your car at the train station. Alternatively, you can arrive by train.

🚞Take the iconic train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen. It runs every half an hour, takes 12 minutes and costs 7.20 CHF for a single journey. Discounts apply.

TIP: The best seat is on the right at the beginning of the journey, because you will be able to see the famous Staubbach Falls. Then, it's best to sit on the left-hand side to see the tail of the train, but by a window that can be opened. Towards the end of the journey, the right side is best for a view overlooking the famous Lauterbrunnen valley. All this is in the direction of the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen.

I have exact spots for you to visit in Wengen:

  1. ☕️ Hotel Schönegg has a beautiful terrace with a mountain view. Have a coffee and enjoy your meal. I highly recommend this place.

  2. There is a viewpoint by the church overlooking the famous Lauterbrunnen Valley.

  3. This requires a little bit of hiking, but the views along the way are just stunning, overlooking the famous Lauterbrunnen Valley. Start your hike towards Hotel Schonegg, then continue towards Leiterhorn.

On your way back to Lauterbrunnen, you can either take the train or hike back down, which takes around an hour and a half (3.2km).
