Koonalda Homestead is one of those outback stops that feels like stepping into a time capsule — like, properly frozen in time. You’re cruising across the vast, flat nothingness of the Nullarbor, and then boom — this eerie, abandoned homestead pops up, scattered with rusted old cars, vintage petrol bowsers, and relics from the days when this was a pit stop along the original Eyre Highway.
It’s got that real “Mad Max” vibe goin’ on, and if you’re into Aussie history or just love a bit of retro outback weirdness, you’ll froth it. The stories behind the place are wild — this used to be a working sheep station and roadhouse, and now it’s just left to the elements, slowly fading into the red dirt.
Not far from the homestead (but separately pinned!) is Koonalda Cave — and this thing is huge. You’re driving across what feels like endless flat desert, then suddenly there’s this gaping limestone sinkhole in the middle of it all. It’s a sacred site for the local Indigenous people and holds archaeological significance too — definitely worth a stickybeak, just tread respectfully.
It’s all very remote (no facilities), so come prepared with plenty of fuel, water, and common sense. Camping is allowed and free, and yes, it’s pet-friendly — just keep your doggos close 'cause you’re properly off-grid out here.
