Ahhh Johanna Beach Campground — one of those spots that makes you go, how is this even free?! It’s a lush, grassy little gem tucked along the Great Ocean Road, right by the beach, and yep, it’s totally free to camp here. There’s heaps of space, plenty of flat ground to roll out the swag or park up the van, and it’s honestly just so peaceful.

It is a bit of a drive in, especially if you’re coming off the main drag, but if you can time it to arrive in the early arvo, it’s totally worth it. Set yourself up, pop a cold one, and soak in the coastal vibes — the sound of the waves, the salty breeze, kangas bouncing through the grass. Pure magic. The beach itself is stunning but can be rough, so not ideal for swimming, but perfect for a walk or just watching the surf roll in.

There are basic drop toilets but no other facilities, so make sure you come prepared with water and supplies. And yep, it’s pet-friendly — bring the pup, they’ll love it too (just keep ‘em on a lead to protect the wildlife).

Honestly, it’s one of those spots that makes you feel like you’ve scored the jackpot without spending a cent.
