Jumbo Pass – Glacier Creek FSR (Kaslo), BC

Jumbo Pass is a striking alpine pass surrounded by glacier-clad peaks and subalpine meadows, offering awe-inspiring ridge views paired with a cozy summit hut. Ideal for hikers seeking a dramatic day-trip or a rustic overnight in the Purcell Range. 📸 Expect a panorama of glaciers, larches, and rocky ridges—especially rewarding as the sun dips near the ridge huts.

Distance: ~10 km round‑trip
Elevation Gain: ~800–950 m
Route Type: Out & back (with optional north ridge scramble)
Time Required: 4–6 hrs for a day hike; 1–2 days if staying at the hut

Trailhead & Route:
Access via Glacier Creek FSR (~90 km on gravel), then hike through dense forest switchbacks until meadows open around 4 km in. Continue to the saddle at Jumbo Pass, then head left to the cabin. Scramble 150 m up the north ridge for broader alpine vistas

Highlights & Photo Spots:

  • Wildflower-covered meadows and larches in late summer

  • Glacier glimpse through trees around Saddle Creek

  • Dramatic ridge and summit views across Karnak, Jumbo Mountains, and Horseshoe Glacier

  • Quaint ridge hut and nearby alpine tarn—ideal golden-hour photo backdrop

Camping & Permits:

  • Overnight options include wilderness hut (book via Columbia Valley Hut Society) or tenting near the shelter

  • No formal camping permits (site maintained by Rec Sites & Trails BC)

Season & Tips:

  • Best Season: Mid‑July to early September, with snow cleared

  • Early/late season may have lingering snow—micro-spikes or poles recommended

  • High-clearance or 4×4 vehicle required for FSR access

  • Weather changes rapidly above treeline—carry layers and emergency gear

Gear Essentials:

  • Hiking boots with ankle support

  • Trekking poles (helpful on steep and ridge sections)

  • Overnight gear (shelter or hut booking) if staying

  • Water filter (small tarn nearby), rain protection, headlamp, bear-safe storage
