🧭 Stakkholtsgjá Canyon
🗺️ How to Get There:
To reach Stakkholtsgjá, drive the F249 into Þórsmörk, departing from Road 1 near Seljalandsfoss. The road requires multiple deep river crossings and a super jeep or modified 4x4 is strongly recommended. Once in Þórsmörk, park in the designated lot near Stakkholtsgjá. From there, hike approx. 2 km into the canyon, which narrows dramatically and ends at a towering hidden waterfall inside a mossy chamber. It's a fun little hike where you will need to cross some streams jumping from rock to rock.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Mid-June to mid-September when the F-roads into Þórsmörk are open.
Avoid visiting during or after heavy rain as the riverbed hike can flood. Best lighting occurs in early morning when the canyon walls are evenly lit and fewer people are around.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Morning or overcast days provide soft light and reduce harsh shadows
Late afternoon brings warm tones to moss walls, but deeper shadows
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the narrow canyon walls and scale
Tripod for long exposures at the waterfall inside
Waterproof boots, the trail includes river wading
Drone (fly outside the canyon) to capture the entry cliffs
Composition ideas:
Use the canyon’s walls as natural frames leading toward the light
Inside, shoot long exposures of the waterfall descending through mist
Capture hikers walking into the canyon to show scale
At the mouth, compose wide shots showing the green valley and entry
