🐦 Látrabjarg Cliffs
🗺️ How to Get There:
From the town of Patreksfjörður, follow Road 612 (Örlygshafnarvegur) west toward the end of the peninsula. The road is gravel but passable by 2WD in summer; however, it can be rough and narrow in sections. After about an hour’s drive, you’ll reach a small parking area at the base of the cliffs.
The puffins nest near the upper cliff edge, and trails lead along the rim, stay well back from the edge, as the ground can be soft and dangerous.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Late May through mid-August is ideal, when puffins are nesting in full force. They’re most active in the early morning and late evening. The road may be closed in winter and early spring due to snow and landslides.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Sunrise or sunset for golden light on the cliff faces. Puffins tend to be most photogenic during evening when they return from the sea.
Recommended gear:
Telephoto lens (200mm–400mm) to get close portraits of puffins and seabirds without disturbing them
Wide-angle for cliff edge views and seascapes
Drone flying is restricted or discouraged near bird colonies, check local regulations and avoid disturbing wildlife
Composition ideas:
Capture close-up puffin portraits with blurred ocean backgrounds
Use the curve of the cliff as a leading line in wide compositions
Frame birds in flight with the endless ocean behind
Include low vegetation or cliff flowers in the foreground to add context
