🚙 Bláfjallafoss River Crossing (Öldufellsleið)
🗺️ How to Get There:
This location is along F232 (Öldufellsleið), a rough highland track connecting to the F210 near Mælifell. The waterfall itself is unnamed on most maps but known colloquially as Bláfjallafoss, and this river crossing occurs directly above it.
Approach is only possible in high-clearance 4x4 vehicles during the summer months, and the river must be assessed before crossing, it can be strong after rainfall or glacial melt. The crossing is wide, shallow, and scenic, with the river splitting and tumbling into a dramatic green canyon right after the fording point.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
July through early September during the F-road season. Best in early morning or late afternoon for directional light across the canyon. After rain, river levels rise and crossing may become unsafe, always check safetravel.is and road.is before attempting.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Late afternoon for side light across the river and canyon walls. Overcast is also great for color saturation on moss.
Recommended gear:
Drone for top-downs and wide contextual sweeps of the entire canyon system
Wide-angle lens for ground-level shots of vehicle crossing
Composition ideas:
Drone: fly directly above to capture the split in the river before the plunge
Frame a vehicle mid-crossing to show scale and drama
Shoot downward from the ridge to catch the cascade dropoff and background peaks
Emphasize the contrast between moss, rock, and glacier water
