🌊 Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located just west of Vík, Reynisfjara is easily accessible via a turnoff from Route 1 onto Road 215. A short drive brings you to a large parking lot right next to the beach. The entire area is accessible year-round by any vehicle. The parking fee is 1 000 ISK per car, pay via Parka app or at the onsite kiosk, cameras monitor license plates so be mindful specially with rental cars.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Open year-round, but May to August is the best time to see puffins, which nest in the cliffs above the beach. Winter brings moody light and stormy seas, while summer offers longer shooting windows. Always check tide forecasts, the sneaker waves here are extremely dangerous and have claimed lives.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Morning or late afternoon for softer light on the cliffs and sea stacks. Overcast skies enhance the contrast of the black sand and basalt patterns.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the hexagonal basalt columns and sweeping beach. Telephoto for compressing the Reynisdrangar sea stacks or isolating puffins on the cliffs. Drone is possible, but use with extreme caution due to strong winds and birds.
Composition ideas:
Frame the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the ocean, best done from a lower perspective along the surf line.
Use the basalt cave and columns (Hálsanefshellir) for strong vertical geometry, perfect for leading lines.
Capture puffins on the grassy cliff ledges above the columns during nesting season.
Try long exposures of the waves pulling back across the black sand to create surreal textures and motion trails.
