🏞️ Múlagljúfur Canyon
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located just west of Hof on the South Coast, Múlagljúfur is accessed via a short gravel road off Route 1, shortly before reaching Fjallsárlón if coming from the west. The road is not the best but usually passable by 2WD in dry summer conditions. Park near the end of the track (A paid parking fee of 1 000 ISK per vehicle is now in effect), and follow the hiking path into the canyon. The trail is steep, gaining elevation quickly as it traverses the ridge above the canyon.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best accessed from late May through September when trails are dry and visibility is clear. In autumn, the moss turns golden, creating stunning contrast. Avoid during rain, the trail becomes slippery and clouds often obscure the view into the canyon.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Afternoon and evening offer the most balanced light across the canyon walls. Morning light is often blocked by surrounding peaks. Overcast conditions can add mood and depth.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for canyon views and waterfall layering. Telephoto for compressing the ridges, isolating falls, and pulling in glacier detail in the background. Drone is highly recommended, it reveals the structure and drama of the canyon from above.
Composition ideas:
Capture the layered waterfalls (including Hangandifoss) framed by moss-covered cliffs.
From the ridge trail, look west for deep leading lines formed by the canyon walls.
Top-down drone shots showcase the canyon's shape and river threading through it.
Oblique drone angles facing inland highlight the mountains, glacier tongues, and atmospheric depth.
