🚁 Ölfusá River (Drone Spot)

🗺️ How to Get There:
Head north from Selfoss town on Eyrarbakkavegur (Route 34), the road that crosses Ölfusá and continues west. Shortly after the river crossing, look for a place to stop safely then launch your drone for a clear aerial views of the braided river channels.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Late spring through early autumn (May–September) is best, glacial melt peaks and braided patterns are boldest then. Late summer offers richer tone contrasts. In winter, water flow is calmer and may be muddy or icy, drone flying is possible only in favorable weather.

📸 Photography Tips:

Best time of day:
Midday through late afternoon gives balanced light with minimal shadows, revealing the complex river pattern. Overcast skies also work well.

Recommended gear:
A drone with wide dynamic range to capture both bright water and darker riverbeds. ND filters help smooth motion in video. Extra batteries are essential for exploring various altitudes and angles.

Composition ideas:

  • Use a top-down drone perspective to emphasize abstract braiding shapes and geometric patterns.

  • Try oblique angles looking inland to show depth and flow direction.

  • If conditions allow, capture the point where the river merges into surrounding plains for scale and context, try with the nearby black sand beach for some extra shots.
