🏞️ Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located just off Road 574, about 1 km east of Arnarstapi. The gorge is visible from the road as a dark slit in the mountain. A gravel turnoff leads to a small parking area, and a short uphill hike (about 10–15 minutes) brings you to the entrance of the gorge. The path is steep and can be slippery when wet.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best visited in late spring through early autumn when the trail and interior of the gorge are safe to access. In winter, ice can make it extremely dangerous to enter. After rain, water flow inside the gorge increases, creating more dramatic visuals but also making it slippery.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Midday works well to light the narrow canyon interior when the sun is overhead. Overcast days reduce contrast and bring out mossy textures.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to shoot inside the gorge
Fast lens for low-light handheld shots inside the narrow walls
Tripod (if space allows) for long exposures of dripping water
Waterproof shoes and gear protection are recommended
Composition ideas:
Frame the dark opening from below with hikers or moss for scale
Inside the gorge, use light shafts or water flow for ethereal compositions
Contrast the green moss against black rock
If the water is flowing, experiment with long exposures of the falling water
