🧱 Gerðuberg Cliffs
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located just south of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, near the junction of Road 54 and Road 55. From Reykjavík, take Road 1 north, then turn onto Road 54 toward Snæfellsnes. Just before reaching the intersection with Road 55, a sign for Gerðuberg leads you down a gravel road. The cliffs are visible from afar and the gravel track is suitable for all vehicles in summer. There’s a small parking area at the base of the cliffs.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Accessible year-round, though best in spring to autumn for clearer skies and easier access. In winter, the road may be icy or closed after snow. Late summer adds soft grass and vibrant moss at the base of the cliffs.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Golden hour or early morning, when the sun casts side light and shadows that highlight the geometry of the columns.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the full height and length of the cliff wall
Telephoto lens to compress and isolate column textures
Drone for overhead and side views of the entire formation and lava field context
Composition ideas:
Frame the base of the columns with grassy foreground
Shoot from the base looking up to exaggerate height
Walk the clifftop trail for a unique view across the landscape
Drone: fly laterally across the wall for a cinematic parallax effect
