🏞️ Sigöldugljúfur Canyon
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Route 26, turn onto F208 (Sigalda route) and follow the road until you reach the Sigalda Power Station. Just past the power station, drive up and down the first mountain and just when coming down look for a small dirt track on the left, this leads to an informal parking area near the canyon’s edge.
A 4×4 is recommended for the F208, though the road is usually well-maintained in summer. Free parking as of now. No facilities or infrastructure at the site so leave no trace.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Only accessible in summer (typically mid-June to mid-September) with a regular 4x4, when F208 is open. Late July and August offer the best visibility and vegetation.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Late afternoon or early evening provides sidelight into the canyon and brings out the deep turquoise tones of the river. Midday also works well for drone shots.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the full sweep of the canyon. Telephoto to isolate individual waterfalls. Drone is essential, this location is famous for aerial compositions showing the winding river and parallel falls.
Composition ideas:
Top-down drone shots to reveal the curves of the river and waterfall symmetry
Ground-level images from the rim with foreground lava rock or moss for depth
Include hikers or elements of scale to emphasize the steepness of the canyon walls
Fly along the canyon axis for leading-line compositions with layered perspective
