🏞️ Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon
🗺️ How to Get There:
Access is via the F261 (Emstruleið) from either the west near Fljótshlíð or the east via F210/F261 coming from Mælifell. This is a true highland route, only open in summer (late June–early September) and requires a capable 4x4 vehicle, with several river crossings. The final section to the canyon viewpoint involves a short walk from an informal parking area near a bend in the track.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
July to early September, when roads are open and river levels are manageable. Evening light casts long shadows and enhances the dramatic relief of the canyon walls. After rain, the river is at its most intense.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Golden hour or late afternoon, especially from the western rim looking east into the canyon where light plays across the moss-covered cliffs.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the full depth and layering of the canyon
Drone for top-down and sweeping perspectives of the winding river
Telephoto for compressing river, cliffs, and sky
Composition ideas:
Use the canyon rim as a leading line toward the river bend
Frame shots with patches of moss or cairns in the foreground
Fly drone out and pan along the canyon to show scale and curves
Look for sun rays cutting through canyon mist in the early morning or late day
