💧 Skútafoss Waterfall
🗺️ How to Get There:
Skútafoss is located off Road 1, about 20 minutes east of Höfn, just after the tunnel under Almannaskarð pass.
From Route 1, turn onto Fremstifoss, and after ~1 km you’ll find a small gravel pull-out. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to reach the waterfall.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Beautiful year-round, but best in late autumn through spring, when the mountain backdrop is snow-covered and the low sun casts beautiful light across the falls.
Winter is particularly magical here, as the scene becomes framed with ice and golden tones.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Morning for direct light on the falls from the east
Golden hour works beautifully, especially in winter with sun low over the glacier backdrop
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the waterfall and backdrop
Drone to shoot from above, showing the fall and surrounding mountains
Tripod and ND filter for long exposures of flowing water
Composition ideas:
Include the mountain peaks at the end of the valley when shooting from the upper part
From below, capture the shape of the cove with a wide angle
In winter, frame the snow-covered foreground grasses to add texture
Low angle shots with foreground ice or rocks work great for depth
