🌊 Kolugljúfur Canyon

🗺️ How to Get There:
Kolugljúfur is just off Route 715, which connects to Route 1 near Víðidalstunga. The gravel road to the canyon is well-maintained and accessible to any vehicle in summer. There is a small parking area right next to the canyon rim, where you can walk directly to several viewpoints, including the bridge that spans the gorge.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Accessible year-round, though the area is most photogenic from late spring to early autumn, when vegetation softens the canyon edges. In winter, the falls often partially freeze, and the cliffs become icy, beautiful, but slippery and potentially hazardous.

📸 Photography Tips:

Best time of day:
Afternoon and evening light illuminate the canyon and waterfall from the side. Morning can be shadowy depending on season and cloud cover. Overcast skies help reduce contrast and highlight textures in the rocks.

Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for capturing the canyon depth and foreground. Telephoto for isolating the waterfall and cliff layers. Tripod and ND filter are ideal for long exposures of the water. Drone can be flown from the surrounding area with care, be aware of wind and birds.

Composition ideas:

• Shoot from the bridge to capture the waterfall (Kolufoss) dropping into the narrow gorge

• From the rim, frame the basalt walls and river as leading lines

• Use long exposure to smooth out the cascade, or freeze motion for raw power

• Drone shots from above show the canyon’s full path cutting through farmland, great for contrast and scale
