🟥 Hengifoss Waterfall
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Egilsstaðir, drive south along Route 931, following the eastern shore of Lake Lagarfljót for about 30 minutes. Park at the Hengifoss trailhead, where there’s a marked parking lot and toilets. The hike is about 2.5 km one way with moderate incline, allow 2 to 4 hours round-trip depending on pace.
On the way up, you’ll also pass Litlanesfoss, another beautiful waterfall framed by hexagonal basalt columns.
🎟️ Parking Fee:
A 1000 ISK per vehicle is charged via Parka app or on-site terminal.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best from late May through September, when the trail is snow-free. In autumn, the red layers of the cliff become even more vibrant against the surrounding color. In winter, access is limited and can be icy, crampons may be required.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Late afternoon or evening light strikes the falls directly and enhances the red strata. Overcast days also work well for bringing out cliff textures.
Recommended gear:
Telephoto lens for isolating the waterfall’s red-and-black cliff face. Wide-angle for capturing both Hengifoss and the canyon. ND filters for long exposures. Drone flying is possible.
Composition ideas:
Frame Hengifoss with foreground river or hikers for scale
Use side light to highlight the layering in the cliff
