🌋 Hverfjall
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located on the eastern side of Lake Mývatn, Hverfjall is easily accessed via Road 848. Turn off onto the short gravel access road marked “Hverfjall,” leading to a parking lot at the base of the crater. From there, a steep but short hike (15–20 minutes) leads to the rim. The path is well maintained in summer, but slippery in wet or snowy conditions. The full rim loop takes about 45–60 minutes to walk.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Late May to September is best for clear skies and accessible trails. In winter, access can be limited due to ice and snow, though the crater looks stunning when covered. Mornings or evenings are quieter with better light.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Golden hour or blue hour for dramatic rim shadows and soft light
Clear nights in winter are perfect for aurora photography from or above the rim
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the full shape of the crater
Drone to show its scale and symmetry from above
Telephoto lens from the distance to compress the crater against the sky or other landmarks
Composition ideas:
Shoot from the rim trail to include the interior textures and Mývatn in the background
Frame the circular shape with drone from directly above or slightly angled
In winter, use rim shadows and snow contrast to emphasize textures
Capture hikers on the rim for scale and atmosphere
