🚁 Tungnaá River Overlook (Veiðivötn Side)

🗺️ How to Get There:
From the Veiðivötn fishing hut area, a rough, unmarked track leads southwest toward a high ridge overlooking one of the widest and most surreal braided sections of the Tungnaá River. The drive from the main road before entering the highlands includes multiple unbridged river crossings and requires a capable 4×4 vehicle with high clearance and experience with off-road navigation. The final ascent brings you to an elevated plateau with full visibility over the river’s fan-like channels. We include this spot on our Highlands Drone Tour

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Only accessible from late June to early September, when F-roads and back tracks to Veiðivötn are open and dry. Best conditions are in July and August, when the glacial meltwater is strongest, and the patterns in the black sand and sediment are at their peak. Avoid in rainy conditions, this route becomes impassable quickly.

📸 Photography Tips:

Best time of day:
Midday to early afternoon is best for top-down drone shots, as it flattens shadows and reveals the intricate river system in full. Cloudy conditions are also ideal for balanced exposure between water and dark sand.

Recommended gear:
Drone is absolutely essential. A wide dynamic range sensor will help capture both the bright water and the near-black volcanic earth. ND filters for video and extra batteries are a must, you'll want to explore in all directions.

Composition ideas:

  • Top-down drone compositions reveal abstract, vein-like river systems flowing across sand plains

  • Include sweeping oblique shots showing the river branching into countless channels

  • Add foreground from the overlook cliff for depth, or fly low to follow a single channel out to the horizon

  • Incredible location for minimalist aerials with soft color palettes
