🌊 Hlauptungufoss Waterfall

đŸ—ș How to Get There:
Located along Road 37, Hlauptungufoss is part of the BrĂșarĂĄ river system near the town of Laugarvatn, and is often visited along with BrĂșarfoss and Midfoss.
To reach it, park at the BrĂșarfoss trail parking and walk the well-marked trail (about 15–20 minutes) heading downstream. You’ll pass Midfoss first, then reach Hlauptungufoss.

đŸŽŸïž Parking Fee:
Around 750 ISK at the official BrĂșarfoss parking area.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best from late spring to early autumn, when the water flow is strong and trails are dry.
Winter access may be possible but often limited due to snow or ice on trails.

📾 Photography Tips

Best time of day:

  • Golden hour for side light that enhances textures in the rocks

  • Cloudy days are excellent for managing water highlights and contrast

Recommended gear:

  • Wide-angle lens for the river and surrounding rock textures

  • Tripod for long exposures and smooth water detail

  • Drone to capture motion in the fast current from above

Composition ideas:

  • Shoot from downstream on the riverbank, using rocks as foreground

  • Frame the black lava formations around the waterfall

  • Include river curves for a leading-line effect

  • Use vertical compositions from the drone
