🪨 Stuðlagil Canyon

🗺️ How to Get There:
From Route 1 in East Iceland, turn onto Route 923 into Jökuldalur Valley. After about 18 km, you’ll reach two main access points:

  • East Side: The preferred access for hiking and photography. Park at the Stuðlagil East Parking Lot (near Grund farm), then hike about 2.5 km to reach the canyon viewpoint at river level. The hike is moderate and follows a dirt track along the river.

  • West Side: Accessible by a short walk from a viewing platform near the power station, but it does not allow access into the canyon. Only recommended for a quick look.

A 2WD can reach both sides in summer, but the east side’s gravel track is easier with higher clearance.

🎟️ Parking Fee:
As of 2025, a 1000 ISK parking fee is charged at the east-side trailhead. Pay via Parka app or terminal at the site.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best from late July through early September, when the water turns turquoise due to minimal glacial runoff (Kárahnjúkar dam limits flow most of the year). Earlier in summer or after heavy rain, the river becomes silty and gray. Not ideal in winter, access is limited and icy.

📸 Photography Tips:

Best time of day:
Late morning to mid-afternoon gives direct light into the canyon. Early morning or sunset can work with angled light on the columns. Cloudy conditions create soft light for textures.

Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for capturing the full verticality of the basalt walls. Telephoto for compression and detail of the columns and river patterns. Drone highly recommended, the aerial geometry of this canyon is spectacular, but avoid flying near hikers or over the river at low altitudes, I've seen crashes here!

Composition ideas:

  • From the bottom of the east side trail, shoot toward the tightest section of columns for symmetrical leading lines

  • Drone top-down to highlight the snake-like river between the basalt walls

  • Oblique aerials reveal the depth and shape of the entire canyon and valley context
